When does Canelo Álvarez fight next?

Canelo owns the WBC, WBO, WBA and IBF versions of the super middleweight division. The Mexican wanted to move up a category to write a new story in the light heavyweights, but he couldn’t. Nonetheless, he closed 2022 with a victory against Gennady Golovkin to close the trilogy and raise his bonuses again and calm down the criticism after his latest disaster.

The Mexican fighter stated in a post fight interview that he will return shortly and Pelea Del Canelo which is also known as the next Canelo fight is going to happen in May 2023. 

We do not know who his warmup matchup will be, but we know that it will be in Mexico. 

Now, against Dmitry Bivol, Álvarez fell in Las Vegas with a unanimous decision of the judges the WBA light heavyweight title rematch will happen in September 2023! 

Canelo returns back to Mexico in May 2023 after 2011:

After more than 12 years outside of Mexico (he didn’t retire, he just fought outside of his homeland), Saúl Canelo Álvarez confirmed his return to the territory where he has not known defeat to engage in the 63rd fight of his career. The last time he appeared before the national public was in 2011 when he, already a champion, defended one of his belts against Puerto Rican wrestler Kermit Cintron. 

On November 26, 2011, the Monumental Plaza de Toros México hosted what would be Canelo Álvarez’s last fight in the national territory.  But we know that Canelo will soon return to his homeland where the Government of Jalisco was once able to buy 10 thousand tickets to give away. 

One day after making this news known, the governor of Jalisco, Enrique Alfaro, assured that he plans to buy 10,000 tickets destined for vulnerable sectors, such as girls and boys with diseases such as cancer and diabetes, as well as boxing academies and high-performance athletes.

In a couple of statements, Alfaro Ramírez assured that he wanted to give tickets to those who did not have the opportunity to buy a ticket for the boxer’s fights, which usually cost thousands of dollars and take place in Las Vegas.

When will the rematch between Canelo and Bivol be?

Canelo Álvarez is recovering from hand surgery, so he had already said that he wanted a fight of medium complexity in May, which could be against Ryder, and then look for a rematch with Dmitry Bivol. By contrast, the latter has said his top priority is the undisputed 175-pound title against Artur Beterbiev.

Promoter Eddie Hearn said that the rematch between Canelo and Dmitry Bivol will most likely take place over the undisputed 68-pound title held by the Mexican. 

“I’m going to put my neck on the line and say that Canelo will fight Dmitry Bivol for the undisputed title at 168 pounds,” during an interview with the iFL TV. “There is a lot of work to be done, but Dmitry Bivol is up for the challenge. Dmitry Bivol searches for the legacy. He would have the opportunity, if he beats Canelo Alvarez, to fight (Artur) Beterbiev in his next bout for the undisputed title at 175 (pounds). (Anthony) Yarde will fight Beterbiev. If he wins, he will fight Bivol ”.

Open to a fight for Canelo’s titles at 168 pounds Bivol accepted a rematch between the two.

“Of course, it would be enough motivation for me to be able to score 168,” said the Russian champion in an interview with the YouTube channel, Boxing Social. “But I need to think about it some more. Because I haven’t been at 168 for a long time, I’m not that weight anymore. If the fight is possible, let’s talk about it, let’s do it. I think I’ll be ready.”

Promoter Eddie Hearn assures that the main doubt that Eddy Reynoso, Canelo’s manager, has expressed to him is whether the rematch with Bivol will be at 168 pounds or 175.

“Eddy Reynoso made it very clear to me that he wants a rematch with Bivol,” Hearn said in his DAZN Boxing Show interview. It will depend on the body. He prefers to go against Bivol in 175, but Bivol wants more belts.”

Eddie Hearn, the British president of Matchroom Sports, assured that he expects the official announcement of the fight between Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez and John Ryder on May 6 in Guadalajara, Jalisco. 

“Not yet,” replied the promoter in an interview with Metro.co.uk. “Saúl announced that his next fight will be on May 6 in Guadalajara. John Ryder is definitely the leading rival for that. We are still trying to finalize the contracts for that fight and hopefully we will have an announcement next week. Now we are working to have everything on the line”.

Eddie Hearn, the British boxing promoter, gave the possible international venues for the next battle of Canelo Álvarez.

“We want that fight to take place internationally, something different for Saúl,” Hearn responded in an interview with DAZN Boxing about the Mexican facing John Ryder. “God willing, we can reach that agreement in the upcoming weeks.”

John Ryder, WBO interim super middleweight champion, announced that one of the possible venues for a possible fight against Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez is Mexico.

“They are in talks,” John Ryder said in an interview with the promoter Matchroom Boxing. “Last I heard, they were looking for the location of the fight. That is progress from my point of view. With my fingers crossed, I hope we can have something in the next two weeks. If it’s the Emirates (Stadium, home of Arsenal in the Premier League), it’s a dream come true, but I think the Emirates is really the place for Las Vegas or Mexico for the 5th of May weekend. I’ll go with what they tell me.”

Canelo’s manager Eddy Reynoso opened the door for a Saul fight against John Ryder in May 2023.

“We’ve been talking about it,” Eddy replied in an interview. “And I think it’s an interesting fight. Whether it is made in Mexico or England, in the United States too. But I think it’s a good fight. Ryder is on fire, from making good fights and we are also ready for whatever it is”.

John Ryder also assured that the Mexican has until May to make the mandatory defense of his WBO belt.

“The World Boxing Organization says they have until May 8 to defend the title or they will make me absolute champion. Surely at the beginning of the year he will announce what he will do and who he will fight against ( Canelo )… My name is there and I am the favorite. I am sure he will fight me first and then he will look for bigger fights,” Ryder stated.
