Rebel Wilson’s Weight Loss (2022): This Is How She Did It!

Rebel Wilson’s weight loss

Rebel Wilson’s weight loss journey STUNNED the world as she was a huge highlight during the 2020 lockdown days! From Fat Amy to “Fit Amy”, the actress credited everything to her “Year of Health”. The actress even reached her goal weight—a month earlier than she anticipated. Compared to exactly one year ago, Rebel’s lost more than 77 pounds, far exceeding her original goal of getting to 165 pounds. But beyond her weight and the visually drastic change, what factors led to the improvements in her health? Let’s find out!

Rebel Wilson’s Weight Loss Diet, Mindset, Exercise, and Continued Maintenance

Rebel Wilson’s weight loss goals:

In 2020, the actress revealed that she was going on the “Year Of Health” journey on her social media page.

Back in July, in a now-deleted Instagram post, the actress penned down her EXACT weight loss goal saying: “I’ll be honest with you guys—with my ‘Year of Health’ mission I’m trying to get to 75kg’s and career wise am trying to get one of my movies into production before the end of the year! Both of these things require daily effort and there are constant pushbacks—but I’m working hard” (PS: 75 kg is roughly 165 lbs.)

Her hard work is clearly paying off, and in this article, we detail EVERYTHING she did over the past couple of years.

Rebel Wilson’s weight loss diet:

1. The Year of Health included managing emotional eating impulses:

Rebel Wilson’s weight loss was thanks to lasting, life-long changes. The actress got candid

during a sit-down interview with Women’s Health saying:“The big lesson I’ve learned is how to deal with my emotional eating, understanding to process my emotions and deal with my emotions better,” she says. “That’s what’s really enhanced my life for the better.”

She also shared exclusively in an Instagram post about how she used to manage her feelings with food, saying: “Okay so I know that I normally post flattering photos of myself…but found this old photo in my emails and was like: whoa!”. “I remember at my unhealthiest—being overweight and this was when I was indulging way too much with junk food. Using food to numb my emotions,” she wrote in the caption.

2. The Year of Health included the Mayr Method diet:

“I’ve really changed to eating a high-protein diet,” said the actress in 2020. One of her specific goals was to reach her goal weight in November for which she used the Mayr Method.

The Pitch Perfect star lost more than 60 pounds over the last year after relying on a combination of exercise and an eating plan called the Mayr Method. The actress said: “I put on the athleisure and went out for a walk, deliberately hydrating on the couch right now and trying to avoid the sugar and junk food which is going to be hard after the holidays I’ve just had but I’m going to do it!” she declared on her Instagram.

Rebel reached her goal weight in November thanks to smaller changes like in August when she was reaching for the candies after dinner and rather thought to herself ‘hmm…better not’ and had a bottle of water instead.”

She also made some food swaps, but let’s dig into what the Mayr Method is. The actress once visited a luxury medical detox and wellness center in Austria called VivaMayr, created by an Austrian physician, named Dr. Franz Xaver Mayr, nearly 100 years ago. While we may not have the money to afford the wellness center, here’s how we can incorporate the  Mayr Method also called the “Mayr Cure, for free.

The philosophy and idea of the Mayr Method:

The Mayr Method believed that most people are poisoning their digestive systems with the foods they eat and how they eat them. A source close to Wilson told People: “It’s an approach (to improve health through digestion) that eliminates food intolerances, reduces sugar, encourages eating whole foods slowly, boosts the immune system, and reduces inflammation,”

The Mayr Method also eliminates snacking (but we know that Rebel may have snacked), reduces dairy intake and gluten as well.

The diet plan of the Mayr Method:

According to Jezebel, The Mayr Method diet plan is centered around whole foods with high alkaline content, like vegetables, fresh fish (we know Rebel who didn’t eat a lot of meat, now enjoys fresh fish, fresh salmon, and chicken breast), and sheep’s milk yogurt.

Most importantly it encourages followers to follow mindful eating techniques like eating without distractions and chewing food slowly. This was something the actress liked because she thinks the deprivation would be overkill.

While she focused on getting enough protein, the actress admitted that ‘Nothing is forbidden.’ We’ll be like, ‘Should we get an In-N-Out burger?’ And I’m like, ‘Nothing is forbidden.’ I can go there, I just might eat HALF of what I used to eat before. You know? And I’ll have a burger, and a FEW fries, and then you feel fine.”

Focusing on words like “half” and a “few” when it comes to junk food and “full” and “replenished” when it comes to wholesome healthy meals might just be what worked with the overall healthy balance in Rebel Wilson’s weight loss.

3. The Year of Health included backtracking for diet transformations:

During an interview with PEOPLE, the actress shared that she used to eat 3,000 calories every day – something

“Before I was probably eating 3,000 calories most days, and because they were normally carbs, I would still be hungry,” the Pitch Perfect star said. “So, I’ve really changed to eating a high-protein diet, which is challenging because (as a vegetarian) she didn’t eat a lot of meat. She now eats fish, salmon, and chicken breast.”

The Aussie actress even credited the coronavirus pandemic with helping her slow down and really pull all the benefits of the mindfulness factor from the Mayr Method.

“I definitely think with the slow down, it did help,” she says. “I think I was emotional eating, and overeating at times because I wasn’t loving myself enough either. And it does come down to that self-worth and self-love.”

Rebel Wilson’s weight loss exercise:

Rebel Wilson’s workout routine included working out with trainer Jono Castano up to seven days a week. But they did include amazing rewards like a gorgeous view on a hike, and looking cool as the hard working actress shared a new intense move in her routine: flipping tires.

She called herself Australia’s latest action hero proud of starting the week off right and turning it up!

Rebel Wilson’s weight loss routine also includes bouts of high-intensity interval training as she is often seen doing exercises with battle ropes

She also did the stair sprints as we saw thanks to her posting regular updates on her workouts to her Instagram account.

Her trainer is a big fan of her making time for her workouts even when she is busy.

“This week (in October 2020) was super busy but I got up super early 3 times (6 am 😜) and went on an early morning hike…even did a couple of 100m sprints to get the heart rate even higher (although my ‘sprint’ is probably someone else’s ‘slow jog’ 😝) but I felt proud of myself and now only 3kg’s away from my goal weight!, she explained.

Rebel Wilson’s weight loss routine also includes a good, old-fashioned walk.

In an Instagram post, she shared the benefits of an early morning walk:  “I got all these high-tech tests done on me during my year of health,” she said. “They said that walking was actually the best way for me to lose unnecessary body fat.”

Rebel Wilson’s weight loss discoveries:

Rebel’s sense of humor is fully intact and she is continuing her “Year of Health” journey but we cannot forget her progress!

In early November, the actress opened up to Drew Barrymore on her talk show The Drew Barrymore Show and discussed her weight loss about the process of shifting from “fads and diets” to now a “holistic approach” focusing on her mental health, too.

“I think what I really suffered from was emotional eating and dealing with the stress of becoming famous internationally. There is a lot of stress that comes with it, and I guess my way of dealing with it was just eating donuts,” she said. “So, I was working on the mental side of things of ‘Why was I not doing that? Why was I not valuing myself and having better self-worth?'”

“I love my curves and stuff. I don’t think I’ll ever go too skinny, but I feel so much healthier,” she asserted about not wanting to get super skinny.

Rebel also said to Drew that the physical and mental changes bled into her career, where she’s “really coming into my own.”

“I feel more in control,” she continued. “I get to produce movies now — which is amazing — and have more control over the content. Everything seems to be coming together. Maybe I was a late bloomer or something, but I’m slowly getting it together.”

Rebel Wilson’s weight loss self-care:

The actress who has a busy schedule (and a history of emotional eating) found substitutes to eating to make her feel better after a long day – taking her vitamins, or enjoying a relaxing bath with Epsom salt or bath oil.

Kudos to Rebel, for finding creative ways to treat herself as she shared on Instagram: “Remember though girls, you still gotta treat yourself 😘 🍰 (I just do it with food now only once or twice a week…and substitute bubble baths on alternate nights)”.

Lastly, Rebel’s thinking sustainability:

She’s keen to maintain and continue the progress she made during her year of health by settling into a routine that fits with her new lifestyle.

The Pitch Perfect star has even taken a step back from her intense regimen from 2020 and focused on keeping her current weight consistent.

After The Year of Health diet:

When it comes to her diet now, the actress said that she’s hit her weight loss goal and is relaxing on the rules when it comes to what she eats. “Last year I was aggressively trying to lose weight and this year it was all about maintenance,” she said. “There were times last year where I was eating on a very strict diet and today, we focus more on balance.”

Speaking of her strict diet, one that included fewer snacks and more protein, today she’s able to enjoy the occasional ice cream and chocolate. The actress finds this approach feels more “maintainable” and exciting as she can add seasonal healthy food such as winter shredded carrots to her salads and summer avocados to tacos.

After The Year of Health diet workout:

Rebel’s also made adjustments to her fitness routine saying she’s not going hard all the time: “I don’t have to do such extreme workouts,” she revealed.

With her time now focused on maintaining her current weight, the actress is keen on doing exercises that feel good such as going on a light walk which she says is more about enjoying the exercise and physical activity.

It’s important to note that throughout her “year of health,” Rebel often went back to her favorite workout: walking. So it comes as no surprise that she picked that over killing herself at the gym.

Rebel Wilson’s weight loss was a marathon, not a sprint:

News from her trainer said that Rebel had done a marathon with her “year (not 6 months) of health. Many times, weight loss enthusiasts don’t realize how long it takes to change the body and make lasting lifestyle changes.

Rebel Wilson’s trainer Jono Castano said: “The first thing is, we need to really understand where they’re at. So, what I mean by that is we need to find out their body fat, weight, and muscle mass”.

Jono Castano is perhaps a big fan of this statistic as he takes photos every week during the transformation to track progress. Also, according to his interview with Yahoo! Lifestyle, he said: “Because what tends to happen as well is that a lot of people weigh themselves and they don’t understand why they’re not losing weight, because they’re putting on muscle, and then they’re looking better.”

“I think with any type of transformation, you shouldn’t always look at the easiest option, you know, two months is not enough time to be able to change your body,” he said when asked about fad diets and eight-week programs. “Don’t forget, two months, you’re putting a lot of stress on yourself. When your goal is like that and you don’t achieve it, it can cause a lot of mental problems. So, my advice is to keep your goals realistic, short and then achieve them and progress from there.”

Keeping one’s goal realistic (whether you’re an actress or a busy overworked mom), is helping to change your lifestyle and your mindset in the long term. Castano said: “A transformation is never-ending, the journey always continues, so you can never give yourself 10, 12 weeks,”….“Because it just continues, once you reach your goal then what? Then you’re going to stop? You can’t stop a lifestyle, you continue and you become the best version of yourself, as cliché as it sounds.”

In conclusion, let’s leave you with this motivational post about Rebel Wilson’s weight loss journey: Crawl if needed towards your goals.

The actress wrote in one Instagram caption: “Even if you have to crawl towards your goals, keep going x it will be worth it. Try and give a little bit of effort each day…I know some days are frustrating as hell, you feel like giving up, you get annoyed at the lack of progress…but good things are coming your way!”
